Restaurant "Zum Bären" Two centuries of hospitality 1799 - 1999
The over two centuries old facade of our restaurant Zum Bären invites guests from here and abroad to stay and enjoy. A lot of water has flown down the Main, but even though the time has left its mark on Höchst, the old town seems unspoiled. Especially here at the castle square where its town houses from the 16´til 18th century have been buildt around it. Also the remainings of the Mainzer customs castle and the castle ot the rennaisance are still in a good condition. The restaurant "Zum Bären" with its facade build only 1799 in the classical style is dominating the north side of this square. The history of the restaurant goes further back than its appearance shows. So at the same place a restaurant called "Schwarzer Bär" has been proven when the owner "Georg Bär" died in 1744. Therefore we can asume that the same Georg Bär was the once who has given the tradition to the restaurant "Zum Bären" at the castle square. But it can also been years before he died because of take over.
In the same year 1744 Anna Dorothea Bär (must be the daughter of Georg Bär) married Stefan Sievenborn who was already mentioned in 1745 in sources as owner of the restaurant after his father in law died. For unknown reason he left the restaurant after one year until his death in 1766. In the year of 1750 until 1767 a new owner completly renovated the house his name was Michael Biener. More than two generations familiy Huber were running the business until late 18th century. The today, vaulted ceiling of wood, and the wall coverings are still original from the renovation of the year 1908. The self brewed beer and the selfmade Apfelwein (apple wine) unfortunately belong to the past. Time has changed also in old Höchst.
Above all the restaurant "Zum Bären" is looking back to more than two centuries unbreakable tradition of hospitality. Since ever, the owners of "Zum Bären" have only one effort, to make the visitors feel comfortable and this will never change.
